Regulations

The Law 6/2002, of 18 June 2002, on protection of aquatic ecosystems and regulation of continental water fishing (BOPA Nº 151, of 1 of July 2002) classifies continental waters based on their regime of exploitation in: Zones of Special Regime and Free Zones. The Free Zones can be of two types:

- Free Zones in Traditional Regime: In these zones all allowed baits can be used and fishing is allowed until to catch the maximum number of pieces that permits the annual regulation of freshwater fishing.

- Free Zones without Death: In these zones only artificial baits permitted by regulations are allowed. The captured fish must be immediately returned to the river in good conditions for its survival. These zones are properly marked.

The Zones of Special Regime are those ones in which fishing is made in accordance with special protection measures or in accordance with technical management and exploitation plans. These Zones of Special Regime are divided in:

- Fishing Reserves: those courses, sections of courses or water masses in which, in temporal or permanent way, the fishing of all or some species is prohibited for biological, scientific or educative reasons. These zones are properly marked.

- Fishing Preserves:  those courses, sections of courses or water masses in which the fishing, realized with solely sport aims, is regulated in order to exploit resources with predetermined objectives of sustainable management. In these preserves the fishing is legal only after obtaining corresponding permission. These zones are properly marked.

- Zones of Special Protection: those zones of special interest for fish wealth which, because of their natural or ecological characteristics or biological potential of their fauna, require special protection. This protection can be made by establishment of Fishing Lodges that serve as reserves of reproducers and are forbidden, or Genetic Reserves, whose species need to be preserved and their genetic potential as well as their biodiversity maintained. The type of their regime might be of free zone without death, preserve without death or private preserve.

The Fishing Preserves in whose management the Councils with the competent Regional Ministry will be able to collaborate are classified based on their regime of exploitation in:

- Intensive Fishing Preserves : those in which the appropriation of

obtained catches is allowed and which maintenance requires periodic releases of units.

- Fishing Preserves Without Death: those in which the captured fish must be immediately returned to the river and in good conditions for its survival.

- Free Zones in Traditional Regime: those in which the appropriation of obtained catches is allowed and which exploitation is done in accordance with the annual regulation of freshwater fishing.

List of fishing preserves in the Principality of Asturias

In the fishing season 2006 there have been created   44 new partial salmon preserves in the free salmon zones of the rivers Narcea, Seals, Cares and Deva. They are named partial preserves because it is possible to fish there during Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of every week, keeping the regulations of free fishing during the remaining days. (Sundays, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)

In these partial preserves as well as in the rest of defined salmon preserves in these rivers, on Thursdays the fishing of species of salmonidae family is allowed exclusively with artificial fly, being totally forbidden the fishing in the rest of free zones.

The changes in regulation of limited, reserved fishing zones and free zones of fishing without death are collected annually in the regulations of freshwater fishing.
