Council for Organic Agricultural Production of the Principality of Asturias (COPAE)

The COPAE is the only body in charge of controlling and certifying the organic agricultural production of the Principality of Asturias.

The COPAE (Council for Organic Agricultural Production of the Principality of Asturias) is the only body in charge of controlling and certifying the organic agricultural production of the Principality of Asturias.

The COPAE is a public decentralized body of the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Fisheries that is the competent authority for agricultural production. The COPAE was set up in 1996 by the Decree 67/96, by which the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Fisheries is appointed as the competent authority for agricultural matters and the COPAE is appointed as a control body. At present, the COPAE is regulated by the Decree 81/2004, of October 21st, that establishes that it is as a decentralized body of the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Rural Development.

The COPAE is regulated by internal regulations, which were approved by the Council’s plenary meeting. The COPAE’s primary function is to control and certify the organic production. In this sense, the COPAE is responsible for managing the Register of Operators that includes producers, manufacturers, marketers and importers of organic products. It is a public certification service and operators benefit from not having to assume the control and certification costs. Apart from this, the COPAE has other functions. One of the main ones is to promote the consumption of organic products, and spread the knowledge on organic production systems.
